This is a great community program to collect and dispose of old prescription drugs. Optimists Clubs can use the materials here to talk to their local law enforcement agencies and set up similar programs in their area.
Please note: The public cannot just drop off prescription drugs at local law enforcement agencies, unless the agency has a special program in place. These materials are provided to help Optimist Clubs setup special prescription drug collection events in cooperation with their local law enforcement.
According to a survey by the Partnership for a Drug Free America:
- 19% of the teens reported abusing a prescription drug at least once in their life.
- 41% of teens reported they believed the abuse of Pharmaceuticals is less dangerous than illicit drugs.
- 61% noted that prescription drugs are easier to obtain than illicit drugs.
In Arizona, the use of prescription drugs has increased among 8th, 10th and 12th graders; statistics show that more than 1 in 5 in this age group have reported abusing prescription drugs.
- All Dispose A Med Programs must be in compliance with all state and federal solid and hazardous waste regulations as well as the Controlled Substances Act.
- Medications can only be collected from citizens at law enforcement agencies or at special events where law enforcement officers are present to take possession of the medications.
- These programs cannot accept medications from doctors or veterinarian offices or clinics, long term care facilities, hospitals or other medical facilities.
